5 TEACHING IDEAS FOR COME FOLLOW ME LESSONS

See the complete list of CFM Lessons

3 Nephi 17 – 19

This lesson has five outstanding topics: Study, Prayer, Lost 10 Tribes, Shining Our Light, and Miracles. Each invites hearty gospel discussion and reflection.

Lesson Notes

You can find the full Come, Follow Me lesson here. Unless you opt to spend a lot of time on a particular quote, try to pick around 2 questions per quote. Choose the questions that resonate the most with you and make a meaningful discussion for your group of personalities.

All blue quotes from the Book of Mormon (unless otherwise noted).

Lesson Prep

  • If you want the discussion to be more meaningful, hand out reading assignments ahead of time and ask the reader to answer one question about them (pick one of the questions below and give it to them, along with the assigned quote). The sooner you do this, the better, but if possible, at least show it to them before the Sacrament meeting. You can also text or email it.
  • Ask various people to read and participate – especially those who aren’t asked as much.

Lesson Delivery

You can arrange the quotes in any order that makes sense to you. I suggest starting with the most important ones and working your way down. Don’t worry about covering all the quotes.

  • Make sure you assign others to read the quotes. You’re talking enough already. Letting others read allows more people to participate.
  • Encourage discussion by accepting all reasonable answers. Validate people for participating and be thankful they spoke up. Engage with the answer in a conversational way whenever it feels natural. Never say, “That’s not the right answer,” or “We haven’t got to that part of the lesson yet.”
  • Remember, spiritual discussion is golden. We want people to talk about the gospel together.
  • If a lesson takes a different turn than the one you planned, roll with it. The Spirit intends for you to be successful.
  • If the discussion gets too non-spiritual, pull it back by going to the following quote or question.
  • Avoid videos – they shut down discussion. Save them for personal study.

Quote #1 (study)

Possible engagement tool: Ask your class to imagine that they are with the Nephites at the Temple when Jesus Christ appears, and they hear these words spoken to them.

Possible discussion questions: Would it be good to study God’s word more and more intentionally? What would you do if you heard Jesus say these words to you? How can we be stronger and better able to understand Jesus’s words? (Accept all reasonable answers – upgrade our scripture study habits and prayers)

Quote #2 (lost)

The Lost 10 Tribes are often mentioned and important to us. They are one of the significant events leading up to the Second Coming.

We know Jesus went and visited with other peoples besides the Americas, but we do not have their records. But Nephi prophesied that someday we would have their records.

Possible discussion questions: How does missionary work fit into “gathering the lost ten tribes? Could every convert, regardless of their known lineage, potentially be part of these tribes? How can we help to gather Israel?

Great Quote!

Quote #3 (prayer)

Possible intro: One of the miraculous events during Christ’s visits was hearing how Jesus Christ prayed to the Father. Let’s listen to how the people described it.

Note: Can be divided between 2 or more readers.

Great Quote!

Possible discussion questions: If we are to become more like Jesus, should our prayers improve? How can we become better at prayer? Have you ever had an especially meaningful prayer? How does deep, heartfelt prayer make you feel? How many times a day are we counseled to pray?

Quote #4 (light)

Possible Intro: Christ always includes us in His mission and empowers us to be our better selves.

Hold up your light that it may shine unto the world.

Even So Shall Ye Do Unto the World

Possible activity: Christ is literally giving you permission to shine! Think of all the different ways our light can radiate and the joy we can bring to the world – in a way others can feel and see. List them on the board.

We feel and see the light through:

  • Service [both to give and receive]
  • Friendship and inclusion
  • Mentoring and teaching
  • Beautiful art
  • Uplifting music
  • Inspired writing
  • Creativity of all kinds

Brilliant, Gorgeous, Talented, Fabulous

Although you may have seen this quote from Marianne Williamson, I had to include it here because it is a perfect fit.

Possible question: What comes up for you as you hear these verses and quotes?

Quote #5 (miracles)

Miracles are always fascinating. How can we see more of them in our lives?

Possible discussion questions: Do you believe miracles can happen? What is necessary to have miracles take place? (faith and righteousness) What is faith?

Seek and expect miracles.

Summary
