5 TEACHING IDEAS FOR COME FOLLOW ME LESSONS

Moroni 1 – 6
Moroni has powerful messages about the church, the Sacrament, and baptism. This is a wonderful discussion of some of the core principles of our faith.
Lesson Notes
You can find the full Come, Follow Me lesson here. Unless you opt to spend a lot of time on a particular quote, try to pick around 2 questions per quote. Choose the questions that resonate the most with you and make a meaningful discussion for your group of personalities.
All blue quotes from the Book of Mormon (unless otherwise noted).
Lesson Prep
- If you want the discussion to be more meaningful, hand out reading assignments ahead of time and ask the reader to answer one question about them (pick one of the questions below and give it to them, along with the assigned quote). The sooner you do this, the better, but if possible, at least show it to them before the Sacrament meeting. You can also text or email it.
- Ask various people to read and participate – especially those who aren’t asked as much.
Lesson Delivery
You can arrange the quotes in any order that makes sense to you. I suggest starting with the most important ones and working your way down. Don’t worry about covering all the quotes.
- Make sure you assign others to read the quotes. You’re talking enough already. Letting others read allows more people to participate.
- Encourage discussion by accepting all reasonable answers. Validate people for participating and be thankful they spoke up. Engage with the answer in a conversational way whenever it feels natural. Never say, “That’s not the right answer,” or “We haven’t got to that part of the lesson yet.”
- Remember, spiritual discussion is golden. We want people to talk about the gospel together.
- If a lesson takes a different turn than you planned, roll with it. The Spirit intends for you to be successful.
- If the discussion gets too non-spiritual, pull it back by going to the following quote or question.
- Avoid videos – they shut down discussion. Save them for personal study.
Quote #1 (witness)
Possible intro: We receive the sacrament every week at church. Have your class listen to the following verses by Moroni and consider the reasons we participate in the sacrament.
Reader 1: And they did meet together oft to partake of bread and wine, in remembrance of the Lord Jesus. (Moroni 6:6)
Possible discussion question: What is the purpose of the Sacrament according to this verse?
Reader 2: O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. (Moroni 4:3)
Reader 3; O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee, in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen. (Moroni 5:2)
Possible discussion questions: What is the purpose of the Sacrament according to these two verses? Have you ever had an especially good experience during the Sacrament? What helps you feel the Spirit during the Sacrament ordinance? What stands out of you today, from discussing these verses?

Quote #2 (baptism)
Baptism is a momentous occasion. It’s an ordinance with a lot of symbolism and cleansing power. Have the class pretend they haven’t been baptized yet. What does Moroni teach that they need to be baptized?
2 Neither did they receive any unto baptism save they came forth with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, and witnessed unto the church that they truly repented of all their sins.
3 And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.
Possible activity: Have your class help you pull out a list of what Moroni teaches about eligibility for baptism. (They do not have to get all of them or word them the same.)
- broken heart
- contrite spirit
- witness/confession to the church
- repentance of ALL sins
- take upon us the name of Christ
- serve Him to the end
Possible discussion questions: Who remembers their baptism and how it felt to be baptized? Would anyone like to share? What do a broken heart and a contrite spirit mean? (Accept all reasonable answers – deeply recognize and feel remorse for your sins.) Does having a broken heart and contrite spirit help make the Sacrament more meaningful? How do you personally take upon you the name of Christ? In what ways can you serve Christ?
Quote #3 (church)
The church has an important role in our spiritual lives. Moroni writes about the care we need to give each other as members.
4 And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.
5 And the church did meet together oft, to fast and to pray, and to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls. (Moroni 6:4-5)
Possible activity: Have your class help you pull out a list of how the Church (us) ought to help its members. (They do not have to get all of them or word them the same.)
- be remembered and thought of
- nourished by God’s word
- help them stay on the right path
- remind them to pray often
- rely on Christ
- meet together often
- fast and pray together
- provide a framework to speak to each other about the condition and needs of each others’ souls
Possible discussion questions: How important is the Church in your life? What part of Church do you especially appreciate? Why? How can we make sure others are remembered and thought of? What helps you stay on the right path?
