Authentic Joseph Smith (No. 10)

Part of the Joseph Smith, Jr. Series

All blue quotes by Joseph Smith (unless otherwise noted).

From Wilford Woodruff’s diary (April 1844)

What about our babies who have already gone to the abode of God? Most of us have either lost a young child or know someone whose heart was broken to pieces over the death of someone far too young. Those children are in paradise waiting for us, and there is a bit of comfort in that thought – but what is their state, and what are they doing?

Joseph Smith parts the veil and gives us an idea of what happens with babies in heaven. This is a fantastic glimpse.

A question – will Mothers have their children in Eternity? yes, yes, you will have the children But as [the child] falls so it will rise, It will never grow. It will be in its precise form as it fell in its mothers arms. Eternity is full of thrones upon which dwell thousands of children reigning on thrones of glory not one cubit added to their stature.

William Clayton also records joseph Smith to say that departed children have lots of intelligence and understanding.

We shall receive them precisely in the same state as they died ie no larger. They will have as much intelligence as we…

(20 March 1842 ~ Words of Joseph Smith)

This unique piece of revelation is quite comforting. Because of Joseph Smith, we know they are loved, in a state of bliss, fulfillment, and well taken care of. We shall meet them again in a joyful embrace full of wonder.

Author’s Notes

The Joseph Smith Series comes from, in part, a book called “The Words of Joseph Smith.”

Note: usually, the book costs a small fortune ($150-$250) because it is out of print. But I found it for free at the BYU Religious Studies Center. (Thank you, BYU)

(P.S. I receive no compensation for any recommendations – I like sharing.)

Is it possible they don’t grow because their mothers get to raise them? Remember, they are adult spirits in baby bodies so eventually they have to grow and develop in order to marry and have spirit children themselves?

David, that is certainly a possibility and as good of a guess as any I’ve heard – perhaps it’s a mystery we solve on the other side of the veil.

So, Is the prophet saying that a child who passes on at a tender age of let’s say, 6 mos. old, will remain a tiny baby with full intelligence? That doesn’t strike as reasonable to me.

That’s certainly a legitimate viewpoint. And for sure this doesn’t match any pattern we currently experience.

Two things I might consider as I ponder this. 1) If I understand, we have a veil placed over our minds when we come here and a lot of knowledge and memories are removed. So maybe the veil is gone after death?

      2) Do you recall this episode in 3 Nephi 26:14-16?

14 And it came to pass that he did teach and minister unto the children of the multitude of whom hath been spoken, and he did loose their tongues, and they did speak unto their fathers great and marvelous things, even greater than he had revealed unto the people; and he loosed their tongues that they could utter.
15 And it came to pass that after he had ascended into heaven—the second time that he showed himself unto them, and had gone unto the Father, after having healed all their sick, and their lame, and opened the eyes of their blind and unstopped the ears of the deaf, and even had done all manner of cures among them, and raised a man from the dead, and had shown forth his power unto them, and had ascended unto the Father—
16 Behold, it came to pass on the morrow that the multitude gathered themselves together, and they both saw and heard these children; yea, even babes did open their mouths and utter marvelous things; and the things which they did utter were forbidden that there should not any man write them.

If mortal babies can speak greater things than men when their tongues are loosed – I’m guessing the same thing is possible in heaven.
